April 1, 2012
Dear friends, No, this isn’t an April Fools message, it’s an update on the school project we are supporting in the community of El Triunfo in the highlands of Guatemala.
This month marks the fourth month of studying for the students in the middle and high school we are supporting in the community of El Triunfo, Guatemala, as the school year runs from January to October. Approximately 80 students are enrolled in grades seven through eleven. Many of these students would not be able to pursue an education without your support.
When I last sent up an update, we were preparing for the First Annual Guatemalan Mid-Winter Bash which was held in late February in Toronto as a fundraiser for the school. For those of you who weren’t able to attend, the evening was a resounding success with almost $5,000 raised. Special thanks to Michele Milan who did a fabulous job of organizing the evening. She did everything from locating a venue (thanks Lenny at Rails & Ales) to selling tickets and pulling together a fantastic silent auction. I’d like to thank everyone who attended as well as all of the local businesses and individuals who contributed to the silent auction. The evening was so successful that we’ve already decided that the Second Annual Guatemalan Mid-Winter Bash will be held on Friday, February 22, 2013. Mark your calendars and keep an eye out for more details later year.
While this event was a great start to the year, your financial support is still welcome. In this project, we are responsible for paying the majority of the salaries paid out to the teaching and administrative staff in both the middle school (grades seven to nine) and high school (grades ten and eleven), which runs over $3,600 per month. While the students still pay a modest monthly fee to cover other school expenses, the school is still an affordable alternative to the private schools located outside the community.
Tax deductible donations to the project can be directed to Pueblito Canada. You can donate online at www.canadahelps.org/CharityProfilePage.aspx?CharityID=25964 (Click on “Donate Now.” Then under “Fund/Designation,” select “El Triunfo School Project.” Or you can also send a cheque payable to Pueblito Canada to:Pueblito Canada @ The Centre for Social Innovation 215 Spadina Avenue Toronto, ON M5T 2C7 ATTN: El Triunfo School Project

This evening I will be heading to Guatemala for a visit. Due to the Easter vacations, I won’t be able to visit the school this week but I will be visiting during the following week. Look for new photos to be posted as well as videos.
