Update for June

June 28, 2013

Dear friends,

While we’ve wrapped up the school year this past week in Canada, it’s only just past the half-way point in the Guatemalan school calendar. As usual I will be heading down to Guatemala to visit the school we’re supporting in the community of El Triunfo in the highlands of Guatemala. The school, which was established in 2008, will celebrate the anniversary of its opening on July 19th. If you happen to be in Guatemala, feel free to join the party! Here are some photos from last year’s event.

As I mentioned, classes are continuing throughout July and August at the school. While you might be on vacation (or at least in summer mode), we still need your support in order to pay the teachers throughout the coming weeks.  We’ve had a tremendous spring so far with many individual contributions plus the success of the 2nd Annual Guatemalan Mid-Spring Bash but I hope we can keep the momentum going.  While I’m not going to launch a fundraising appeal like I did a year ago, I hope you’ll consider supporting the school at this time.. Your tax deductible donations to the school in El Triunfo can be directed to Pueblito Canada. You can donate online at www.canadahelps.org/CharityProfilePage.aspx?CharityID=25964 (Click on “Donate Now.” Then under “Fund/Designation,” select “El Triunfo School Project.”  Or you can also send a cheque payable to Pueblito Canada to:

I’d also thank everyone who helped out on the visit earlier this month of Maria Xoch Ajcalon, a community member from El Triunfo who is a weaver and production manager with Asociacion Maya De Desarrollo. The visit was such a success that we are planning a follow-up visit in the fall. I’ll send out details later in the summer.

Special thanks go out to Sue & Diane, Patricia, Susan & Roxane at the Textile Museum of Canada, Ulises & Ana Luz in Kitchener, the staff at the Waterloo Region Museum, Ellie & her mom at The Root Cellar in London, Marie-France, David & Nelson &Richard at World Accord, Linda and her students at Bishop Allen Academy, Olimpia, Vilma, Julieta & Tony and everyone who I have accidently forgotten (Sorry!)  as well as everyone who came out to see Maria at the various workshops, presentations and sales.

See you in a month or so!

Ken

  1. Congratulations on the success of Sue’s open house fundraiser at which Maria wove a gorgeous scarf. I was lucky enough to make the top silent auction bid and a lucky relative or friend will be getting this for Christmas! I took a photo of the scarf, hoping that I could upload the photo, but I cannot figure out how to do it. It is beautiful – thank you, Maria.
