Dear friends, Spring greetings from Guatemala where yesterday I visited the middle school we are supporting in the community of El Triunfo. This was my second visit of the year to the school. In January, I was able to briefly visit during one of the first day of classes, but it was wonderful to return on a day when most of the teachers and students were present.
The school year is well underway with around 50 students enrolled. The first of four “blocks” of classes was completed in March before the Easter break.
During my visit, I was able to get caught up on the paperwork and hear about some past and upcoming events from now until into the summer including sports tournaments, a dinner to celebrate Mother’s Day and the celebrations for the anniversary of the school in July.
The new backpacks and classroom supplies we purchased for the teachers were delivered in February and were warmly received.
Gregorio, the school director, shared photos of recent artwork completed by students as well as video of science projects such as this water motion machine by a grade eight student. The student says it took him less than two hours to finished it. Based on my recent attempt to assemble a table, it would take me far longer.
Of course, one of the highlights is the visit to each classroom where I was welcomed in English by the grade seven and eight students, but the grade nine class stuck to Spanish.
